The 2015 vintage was very different from the three previous bumper vintages. 2012 thru 2015 were all drought years and all had very nice summer and fall weather, but that is where the similarities end. In 2015 we had our earliest bud break to date because of a warm winter. During bloom time, it was cold and cloudy which stunted the fruit set after budding so early in the season. The Pinot Hill vineyard was more influenced by the unusual weather than our other vineyards. This resulted in extremely low yields with tiny clusters that were dark in color, lending themselves to intense colors and flavors.
Pinot Hill is an evocative beauty! As this vineyard matures it captures the essence of its rugged and windy terrain. This wine walks a fine line between sweet and savory, delicate and muscular. Aromas of small dark fruits, dried flowers, sweet hay, sage and essential oils burst out of the glass. The mouth feels simultaneously thick and compact while also being smooth and elegant. It’s like having two wines in one which makes it incredibly versatile with a variety of cuisine. This will be a very long-lived vintage!
