Pinot Pilot tells the story of Brice Cutrer Jones’s participation in, and ongoing contributions to, the California Fine Wine business—from its founding by Robert Mondavi to the booming business it has become today. Brice is a third–generation military academy graduate, served as a fighter pilot in Vietnam (receiving the appropriate combat decorations and awards), and later graduated from the Harvard Business School. With backing from a well-known NYC financier in 1972, Brice founded Sonoma–Cutrer Vineyards, ultimately becoming one of the highest awarded Chardonnays in the country. In 1999, accepting “an offer he couldn’t refuse,” Brice sold his beloved enterprise. Shortly after he left Sonoma–Cutrer, along with many of his employees and colleagues, Brice and company "boogied west"—the whole five miles to Sebastopol, in the heart of the Russian River Valley. There the team set out to produce America's finest Pinot Noir and founded Emeritus Vineyards. This autobiography tells many of Brice’s stories—most of which we presume might even be true.
