Juan has been in the Sonoma County Wine industry for 35 years, and during his 22 years with Emeritus has been an integral part in the growth and success of both Hallberg and Pinot Hill vineyards. Because of his vast experience through our ranches, Juan sees the benefits of sustainable farming and takes initiative to assess situations accordingly.
As the lead foreman and Pinot Hill ranch manager, Juan’s integrity makes him honest and true to what he believes in, and those values of paving the way for future generations closely align with what we strive to be here at Emeritus. Each member of the team here is treated as one of his own family, collaborating with them effortlessly and encouraging teamwork among his peers. He will always greet you with a smile, and while working alongside him you find that his outgoing personality will make your day even better. When new employees are hired on, Juan is the first to welcome them and teach them the high standards we have in caring for our vineyards. He combines strategy with each employee’s strengths so that the jobs can be done accurately and efficiently.
We at Emeritus Vineyards are blessed to have an employee that is so dedicated, trustworthy, and hardworking, and truly believe that our success would not come full circle without employees like Juan Avila.
We asked Juan:
- What do you grow (or cook) at home?
- I always plant chilies, tomatoes, lemons, onions, and cilantro so I’m always ready to make a homemade salsa or pico de gallo.
- What are you most proud of?
- I am proud of my family, my wife of 19 years, and my son. They have always supported me.
- What’s your favorite season in the vineyard, and why?
- Winter, when pruning begins. I like to imagine how the E-Block vines will grow.
- What’s something you would like to share about yourself?
- I am very happy to be working at Emeritus. In July I have worked here for 22 years. The company has always recognized my commitment as a worker. I have been given the opportunity to teach my peers.

- ¿Qué cultivas (o cocinas) en casa?
- Yo siempre planto chiles, jitomates, limones, cebollas, y cilantro siempre estoy listo para hacer una salsa o pico de gallo casero.
- ¿De qué estás más orgulloso/orgullosa?
- Estoy orgullosos de mi familia, esposa, e hijo siempre me han apoyado. Tengo un matrimonio estable de 19 años.
- ¿Cuál es tu estación favorita en el viñedo y por qué?
- Invierno cuando empieza la poda me gusta imaginarme como va a crecer la guía E-Block.
- ¿Qué es algo que te gustaría compartir sobre ti?
- Yo estoy muy contento trabajando en Emeritus en Julio cumplo 22 años trabajando aquí. Siempre la compañía ha reconocido mi empeño como trabajador me han dado la oportunidad de enseñar a mis compañeros.
